2041 — Pure Three-Mode Gaussian States Have No Bargmann-Type Triangle Phase

Question

Nima's rank-three amplitude packet found the gauge-invariant Bargmann product

γ12γ23γ31\gamma_{12}\gamma_{23}\gamma_{31}

as the datum missing from pairwise magnitudes. Does the Gaussian coefficient lens carry an analogous gauge-invariant triangle loop?

Canonical candidate

Under independent local symplectic gauges

Cij↦SiCijSjT,Si∈Sp⁡(2),C_{ij}\mapsto S_iC_{ij}S_j^T, \qquad S_i\in\operatorname{Sp}(2),

the matrices

Xij=JCijX_{ij}=JC_{ij}

transform as

Xij↦Si−TXijSjT.X_{ij}\mapsto S_i^{-T}X_{ij}S_j^T.

Therefore the cyclic trace

LΩ=tr⁡(JC12JC23JC31)\boxed{ L_\Omega = \operatorname{tr}(JC_{12}JC_{23}JC_{31}) }

is invariant under all three local symplectic gauges. It is the correctly typed Gaussian candidate for a Bargmann-like triangle quantity.

Purity annihilates the candidate

Serafini--Adesso, arXiv:0705.1136, establish that for pure Gaussian states with at most three modes all direct position--momentum correlations can be removed by local Gaussian unitaries. Thus every pure three-mode covariance has a local symplectic representative in which all three cross blocks CijC_{ij} are diagonal.

For arbitrary diagonal 2×22\times2 matrices D1,D2,D3D_1,D_2,D_3,

tr⁡(JD1JD2JD3)=0.\operatorname{tr}(JD_1JD_2JD_3)=0.

Since LΩL_\Omega is local-symplectic invariant, it follows that

LΩ=0on the complete pure three-mode Gaussian locus.\boxed{ L_\Omega=0 \quad\text{on the complete pure three-mode Gaussian locus}. }

Independent source packet

An exact rational pure state generated by two overlapping two-mode squeezers with an intermediate phase rotation satisfies

VΩV=14ΩV\Omega V=\frac14\Omega

and gives LΩ=0L_\Omega=0. Three independent nontrivial local symplectic gauges preserve the same zero. The checker also verifies the diagonal standard-form identity on 125 exact packets.

Cross-sector result

The amplitude and Gaussian sectors diverge sharply at rank three:

amplitude/record lensGaussian covariance lensBargmann triangle phase survivessymplectic triangle trace is purity-annihilated∧3 depends on oriented pair coherencespure state is fixed up to local gauges by standard-form data\begin{array}{c|c} \text{amplitude/record lens} & \text{Gaussian covariance lens}\\ \hline \text{Bargmann triangle phase survives} & \text{symplectic triangle trace is purity-annihilated}\\ \wedge^3\text{ depends on oriented pair coherences} & \text{pure state is fixed up to local gauges by standard-form data} \end{array}

Therefore

the shared exterior Carrier does not imply a shared triangle-phase coefficient.\boxed{ \text{the shared exterior Carrier does not imply a shared triangle-phase coefficient.} }

The Gaussian sector's additional Ω\Omega-contracted coherence equations do not add a new loop phase; they remove it.

Architectural update

The surviving cross-sector architecture is

shared labelled exterior-purity calculus+sector-specific coherence lens and invariant content.\boxed{ \text{shared labelled exterior-purity calculus} + \text{sector-specific coherence lens and invariant content}. }

At three occurrences, the amplitude lens retains a U(1)U(1)-type cyclic phase, while the real symplectic Gaussian lens has no corresponding pure-state modulus.

Next falsifier

The standard-form theorem identifies four modes as the first Gaussian rank where irreducible direct position--momentum correlations can survive local operations. Construct the four-occurrence symplectic loop invariants there and compare them with amplitude Bargmann cycles. The predeclared question is whether the first Gaussian cyclic modulus appears on graph cycle rank one, two, or only through a higher symplectic contraction.
