2736 — Cross-Transfer Has a Bordered Determinant, Not a Self-Adjoint Pencil

For a finite self-adjoint carrier compression, let

M(z)=A−zI,F(z)=bf∗M(z)−1b0.M(z)=A-zI, \qquad F(z)=b_f^*M(z)^{-1}b_0.

The source and endpoint ports canonically determine

L(z)=(0bf∗b0M(z)),det⁡L(z)=−det⁡M(z)F(z).L(z)= \begin{pmatrix} 0&b_f^*\\ b_0&M(z) \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \det L(z)=-\det M(z)F(z).

Thus the theta cross transfer already has a divisor-preserving determinant exteriorization. The obstruction lies one level deeper: because bf≠b0b_f\ne b_0, the border is not a self-adjoint holomorphic pencil. Chiral doubling restores pointwise self-adjointness but introduces zˉ\bar z. Replacing the border by the full two-port Weyl determinant restores Herglotz geometry but generally changes the divisor.

The remaining Hilbert--Polya gate is a source-derived port identification or a holomorphic self-adjoint linearization that preserves the bordered divisor.
