The Shear Is the Snake Boundary of the Gauge Filtration

Strominger identified the gauge shear coordinate-free. For the invariant exact sequence

$$0\to G\to V\to V/G\to0$$

and response $\Delta=R-I$, the snake connecting morphism is

$$\partial:\ker\overline\Delta\to \operatorname{coker}(\Delta|_G)=G, \qquad \partial=\times505222245120.$$

This is the canonical obstruction preventing the extra quotient-fixed relationship from having an integral fixed lift. The torsion orders obey the independent exactness checksum
